Who We Are
The Emergency Aid Center was founded in 1978 by two community activists with a passion to help those in need in our community. Together with the Ministerial Association, they created the Emergency Aid Center to assist the needy, homeless, and unemployed citizens of our area, and we continue their work today to help our clients become self-sufficient.
For ten years Emergency Aid Center was solely funded by the generosity of those in our community, but in 1988 we were accepted as a member agency for the United Way for South Louisiana.
What We Do
Our mission is to provide assistance to families in West St. Mary experiencing harsh circumstances such as unemployment, loss of hours, illness, death of the primary wage earner, fire, flood, and other natural disasters.
We assist our clients through various methods:
- We provide canned goods, meats, cleaning supplies, diapers, and hygiene items through our food bank – the only food bank in West St. Mary parish
- Assistance with household items and furniture when available.
- Our clothing bank.
- Utility assistance.
- Rental and mortgage assistance when funds are available.
- Networking with other agencies, we provide information and referral services for unmet needs.
Where We Serve
From the St. Mary Parish line in Jeanerette, to Four Corners, Glenco, Ashton, Baldwin, Franklin, Verdunville, Centerville, Bakertown, Shadyside, Katy, Charenton, Adeline, Pleasantville, Bayou Sale, Alice C, and Richou, up to the Franklin side of the Calumet Bridge.
How You Can help
The Emergency Aid Center receives care funding from the United Way for South Louisiana which assists with the operational expenses of our office. The majority of funds we use to help families in West St. Mary, though, comes from the Community – churches, individuals, and businesses.
Our food pantry is primarily restocked during our annual Food for Families Food Drive – Food Net held every year on the second Wednesday of December. Other donations that we accept are, but not limited to:
- Canned Goods
- Cleaning Supplies
- Hygiene Items
- Household Items
Monetary gifts are always appreciated and welcomed since we try our best to help everyone who walks through our doors and qualifies for assistance. Remember, what is given in West St. Mary Parish stays in West St. Mary Parish.
When you give to the Emergency Aid Center, you are giving assistance to your neighbors and the families within our community, so your donations are crucial.
